The Vital Spark sails out of Nova Scotia. I don't know her full story—and that's exactly what drew me to paint her.
I've always been fascinated by working boats. Every weathered hull, every worn line, every scratch and repair hints at years of work and lives lived on the water. Even without knowing the details, you can sense that history. Sometimes the unanswered questions are what make a subject most compelling.
This painting came together with an ease that surprised me. The further I worked, the more it seemed to find its own direction. Those are the paintings I trust the most. Rather than forcing every detail, I simply followed where the painting wanted to go.
For me, Vital Spark is a reminder that not every story needs to be fully known to be appreciated. Some places—and some lives—leave an impression simply through the evidence of time, work, and quiet endurance.
Collector Information
Each print is produced as part of a fixed, limited edition of 100 and is individually signed and numbered by the artist. Once an edition is fully collected, it is permanently closed and not reproduced.
Printed on Arches Aquarelle Rag 310 - a 100% cotton archival paper produced by Arches, one of France's historic papermakers with a tradition dating back more than 500 years. The print is created using Canon Lucia archival pigment inks rated for more than 100 years of display life. The surface has a soft, matte texture with a natural warmth that closely reflects the character of the original watercolor.
Each print is prepared in the studio and presented professionally matted in white with a rigid backing, then enclosed in protective, weather-resistant packaging for shipment. Each print is professionally matted to fit a standard 16” x 20” frame.
A certificate of authenticity accompanies every piece, verifying its place within the edition and including a unique identifying number recorded by the artist.
