This is a canvas-topped lobster boat from the 1930s, moored to a timber mooring, silhouetted against sea smoke on a New England morning. These boats sustained my family and my community for generations. Some of the heartiest people I know still work them.
One of my earliest memories is of my grandfather lifting me up while he took a break from painting one of these boats — it was resting on stilts in the boatyard where he worked. He lobstered. He knew these boats the way you know something you depend on.
There is something about the lines of a canvas-topped lobster boat that just feels true. Function and form in complete agreement. I've never been able to look at one without feeling it.
This painting is a love letter to all of that.
Print details: 11" × 14" — limited edition of 100, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Once the edition closes it is permanently retired.
