This painting depicts a canvas-topped lobster boat from the 1930s, resting quietly on a timber mooring against the backdrop of sea smoke rising from a cold New England morning.
Boats like this helped build the communities along the Maine coast. They provided a living for generations of families, including my own. Some of the toughest, most dependable people I've ever known spent their lives aboard vessels like this, earning a living one trap at a time.
One of my earliest memories is of my grandfather lifting me into his arms while taking a break from painting a lobster boat in the mid 1970’s. It rested on wooden stands in the boatyard where he worked. He was a lobsterman, and these boats weren't simply something he admired—they were part of his daily life. He understood them because he depended on them.
I've always been drawn to the clean, purposeful lines of these old wooden lobster boats. Nothing about them was designed for appearance alone. Every curve, every beam, every detail existed for a reason. There is an honesty in that kind of design that has always resonated with me.
This painting is, above all, an expression of gratitude—for the people who built these boats, worked from them, and quietly sustained the communities that grew around them.
Collector Information
Each print is produced as part of a fixed, limited edition of 100 and is individually signed and numbered by the artist. Once an edition is fully collected, it is permanently closed and not reproduced.
Printed on Arches Aquarelle Rag 310 - a 100% cotton archival paper produced by Arches, one of France's historic papermakers with a tradition dating back more than 500 years. The print is created using Canon Lucia archival pigment inks rated for more than 100 years of display life. The surface has a soft, matte texture with a natural warmth that closely reflects the character of the original watercolor.
Each print is prepared in the studio and presented professionally matted in white with a rigid backing, then enclosed in protective, weather-resistant packaging for shipment. Each print is professionally matted to fit a standard 16” x 20” frame.
A certificate of authenticity accompanies every piece, verifying its place within the edition and including a unique identifying number recorded by the artist.
