"Awaiting the Tide" - Original Watercolor on Canvas - Coastal Art
Original Watercolor on Canvas
18” x 24”
Status: Available
“Awaiting the Tide” represents for me a special quiet moment—a quiet moment I had on the Maine shore after my father had passed. It was like a little gift of a return to my childhood scrambling over the shore, immersed in discovery while accompanied by a beautiful moment of stillness.
This painting represents a special quiet moment I had on the Maine shore after my father passed. It was like a little gift — a return to my childhood scrambling over rocks, immersed in discovery, accompanied by a moment of stillness I didn't know I needed.
I gave myself three pigments and let memory do the rest. Every stone in this painting is a different color. Every one was mixed from the same three.
I enjoy painting watercolor on canvas because it uniquely allows for both fluidity and control, creating a balance between openness and structure. I find that relevant to my life more often than not, which may be why it is so rewarding for me.
I hope this piece lends itself to a contemplative setting in your space, where its quiet sense of expectation can be experienced over time.
Each original painting is developed through a deliberate process that emphasizes surface, material, and longevity.
Each work is created using professional-grade watercolor pigments on either prepared canvas or archival 100% cotton rag watercolor paper. The chosen substrate supports the character of the piece while ensuring long-term stability.
For paintings on canvas, the surface is built gradually through multiple layers of gesso, creating a smooth and controlled foundation. A watercolor ground is then applied in several thin layers, with careful sanding between each application to achieve a refined painting surface. This process allows the watercolor to retain its subtlety while adhering securely to the canvas.
For works on paper, the painting is executed on archival 100% cotton rag watercolor paper. Once complete and signed, the work is mounted to a cradled wood panel using an archival PVA adhesive, providing both stability and a clean, contemporary presentation.
Each painting is then sealed with an archival spray varnish to protect the surface while preserving its tonal qualities.
All original paintings are finished in a solid maple floating frame and arrive ready to install. Each piece is carefully packaged in weather-resistant materials and includes a certificate of authenticity verifying the work.
Each painting is a singular work, shaped through both observation and process, and intended to endure as part of a lasting collection.
