People often think of Maine as bright summer days filled with sailboats, lobster rolls, and busy harbors.
The people who call it home know something different.
Spring arrives slowly along the coast. The grass is still waking up from winter. Wildflowers begin to appear along the shoreline. The air is cool enough to remind you that another storm isn't entirely out of the question. Before the summer visitors arrive, there's a quietness that's difficult to describe until you've experienced it.
This painting was inspired by a photograph of the lighthouse at Castine, Maine, taken more than a century ago. The buildings have changed over time, but the feeling of standing there on a cool spring morning has not. That's what I wanted to paint.
Not the postcard version of Maine, but the one that has always felt most familiar to me—the peaceful weeks before the season begins, when the coastline belongs mostly to the people who live there. It's really in moments like these that the coast seems to slow down. The noise disappears, perspective returns, and simply being present feels enough.

Each print is produced as part of a fixed, limited edition of 100 and is individually signed and numbered by the artist. Once an edition is fully collected, it is permanently closed and not reproduced.
Printed on Arches Aquarelle Rag 310 - a 100% cotton archival paper produced by Arches, one of France's historic papermakers with a tradition dating back more than 500 years. The print is created using Canon Lucia archival pigment inks rated for more than 100 years of display life. The surface has a soft, matte texture with a natural warmth that closely reflects the character of the original watercolor.
Each print is prepared in the studio and presented professionally matted in white with a rigid backing, then enclosed in protective, weather-resistant packaging for shipment. Each print is professionally matted to fit a standard 16” x 20” frame.
A certificate of authenticity accompanies every piece, verifying its place within the edition and including a unique identifying number recorded by the artist.
