Narrative:

Anyone who has actually lived in Maine knows that summer is a short window. The rest of the year — the real Maine — looks like this.

This painting is based on a 1910 photograph of the lighthouse in Castine, Maine. The structure looks different today, but the feeling of early spring on the Maine coast hasn't changed. The grass hasn't found its color yet. The wildflowers are just beginning. The sky says it could still snow.

I could have painted a bright summer afternoon. It didn’t feel quite right.

This is the Maine that belongs to the people who live there — the quiet weeks before the crowds arrive, when you can walk out to a place like this and have it entirely to yourself. Stand still long enough and the perspective comes back. The water. The light. The particular silence of early spring on the coast.

That's what I painted. I find it more honest than the postcard version.

Print details: 16" × 20" — limited edition of 100, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Once the edition closes it is permanently retired.
