The great blue heron doesn't fight the tide. It simply waits—patient, present, and unbothered by the movement of the water around it.
There is a quiet confidence in that stillness, and it was that feeling that first drew me to this painting.
As I worked, I found myself making many of the same choices the heron seems to embody. I resisted the urge to overwork the feathers, allowing suggestion to carry more of the story than detail. The waves became energetic and full of movement, while the bird remained calm and grounded. That balance became the heart of the painting.
For me, Between Tides is a reminder that not every moment calls for action. Sometimes the greatest strength is found in patience—in knowing when to wait, when to observe, and when to trust that the next opportunity will come.

The canvas is built through multiple layers of gesso and watercolor ground, each carefully sanded to create a refined painting surface.
