Time and Tide | Solo Exhibition | Starry Night Gallery Daytona Beach | David Neal McPhee

Earlier this month I walked into Starry Night Gallery in Daytona Beach and saw twelve of my paintings hanging on the walls.

Just mine. No other artists. Twelve pieces I made — on canvas, on paper, on a surfboard — arranged in a room together for the first time.

I've been painting since 2007. I've done festivals, juried shows, group exhibitions. I've sold work at outdoor booths in the rain and in the Florida heat. But a solo show is different. It's the first time the work gets to speak as a body — where the connections between pieces become visible, where the through-line of what you're trying to say becomes clear to the people walking through.

The show is called Time and Tide. The title came naturally. Almost everything I paint is touched by time — weathered boats, worn ropes, rocky shorelines shaped by generations of waves. And the tide is always moving. It doesn't wait. Neither does the work.

The exhibition runs through May 31st at Starry Night Gallery, 214 Loomis Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florida. If you're anywhere near the area before the end of the month, I'd love for you to see it in person.
